ELING, parish, suburb of Southampton
The 1086 form may be a clue that a name like hypothetical 'AEthelingas' lies behind this, in the sense of 'those associated with AEthel', possibly and not 'princes'. (For a similar chain of spellings, cf 'Ellingsdean' (Sussex; Gardiner and Coates 1987).) The preponderance of 'E-' spellings may rather suggest a name like hypothetical 'Edla' which Ekwall inferred to have existed on comparative evidence from continental German. If Domesday Book is in error, the field is wide open for interpretation. Cf ELLINGHAM.
