CHILLING, farm in Hook
The reference dating from 982 in the Hyde Chartulary, 'ceolling (burnan)' is to a place in the Isle of Wight (Finberg 1964a: 58), and not to Chilling, as is sometimes said. The present place name seems to be a singular '-ing' derivative of 'ceole'='throat, gullet', its application here being unclear. If we could assume some changes in local coastal topography, we might be able to derive it instead from 'ceol'='ship', but this is speculative. Hook Lake, a mile or so to the W, can never have admitted ships of much consequence.
